1970s Omega Seamaster 'Soccer Timer' Ref. 145.020

1970s Omega Seamaster 'Soccer Timer' Ref. 145.020

Why This Watch Matters

Whether you're cheering on your favorite team or sitting on the sidelines of your child's pee-wee match, the Seamaster "Soccer Timer" has an endlessly fun design with true sporty functionality.

The Full Story

The Omega Seamaster Soccer Timer is one of our favorite examples of a vintage chronograph that was designed with a special purpose in mind. While the chronograph is conventional in capability, its design reveals the backstory of its nickname. The three o'clock sub-dial is divided into a pair of 45-minute halves, which allows its wearer (a referee, perhaps?) to effortlessly time the two halves of a soccer match.

The Seamaster Soccer Timer was produced for a number of years in the 1960s and '70s and came in three separate references. The example we have in the HODINKEE Shop today is a ref. 145.020, which stands out with a cushion-shaped case with a fixed internal bezel featuring a tachymeter scale, and a white dial in excellent condition with three colorful red and black registers. The movement is Omega's manually wound caliber 861, which is the same movement fitted in the Speedmaster Professional ref. 145.022 that was released around the same period this Soccer Timer was produced.

We paired this Omega Seamaster Soccer Timer with our Sedona Strap in Black to provide a neutral frame for the watch's colorful dial layout.
