1977 Rolex Submariner Reference 5513

1977 Rolex Submariner Reference 5513

Why This Watch Matters

The beautiful symmetry of a no-date, "pre-Comex" dial reference 5513, in all its glorious condition.

The Full Story

The Rolex Submariner reference 5513 was produced for a little over twenty years, in the days when tool watches were actually used as tools. There were many slight changes made over the years to various aspects of the 5513 dial, particularly the shift in fonts and the particularities of the text. All of them are much beloved by collectors of vintage Rolex, and by all those who distrust the date window. This example from 1977 has a dial version called a pre-Comex dial, named as such because of its large Coronet crown and the large luminous dots. It has been preserved in exemplary condition, with the plump tritium lume plots aging to a gorgeous patina, and with very few blemishes to the bezel. Don't wait - this one won't last long.

What we Love and What You Should Know

This is a very beautiful example of a late-1970s matte dial reference 5513. There are light scratches throughout the bracelet and caseback, but the case and bezel have remained very sharp. The lume plots match the tritium lume on the handset perfectly, and have aged to a creamy pumpkin color. There is some light oxidation to both the hour and minute hands. The bracelet is dated to 1977, same as the case, and comes with a diver’s extension and extra link.
