1987 Rolex Submariner Reference 5513

1987 Rolex Submariner Reference 5513

Why This Watch Matters

The less often seen transitional iteration of the reference 5513 still has the plexiglass as an ode to the vintage era.

The Full Story

The reference 5513, a non-date Submariner, has been a huge success for Rolex for several decades. As a matter of fact, it has been one of the longest produced single references among the Submariner line starting from early 1960 until around 1990. This example is known as the “transitional” iteration and features a desirable combination of earlier and later features. This 5513 has the more modern white gold surrounds around the indexes, yet still retains the good old plexiglass crystal (before it was replaced by a sapphire crystal as seen in the next generation reference 14060) that we love. It is often considered to be a hybrid between vintage and modern, and this example is sure to become a trusty daily companion on your wrist.

What we Love and What You Should Know

This is a perfect workhorse example for everyday wear. The case has retained a sharp profile with fairly thick lugs. The bezel insert is likely a service replacement with the pearl missing. The caseback inside is stamped “5512.” The bracelet is overall in very good condition with some light stretch between the links. The dial shows an overall unevenness on the surface, and therefore, has a more semi-matte appearance as opposed to a uniform glossy finish. The lume used for the indexes and hands remains in very good condition, and is consistent in coloring as well. The movement is in running condition at this time.
