1989 Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513

1989 Rolex Submariner Ref. 5513

Why This Watch Matters

You simply can't go wrong with a classic no-date Sub.

The Full Story

Rolex introduced the Submariner ref. 5513 in 1962, and it was in production until 1989. Its production run of 27 years made it one of the longest-running continuously produced references in Rolex history.

This example from 1989 is from the last batch of ref. 5513s, featuring an "L" in front of the serial number on the case. Being a later example, this watch offers a great mix of modern and vintage Submariner characteristics. The crystal is still plexiglass, but the hour markers have white gold surrounds that give the watch a contemporary feel. The dial is a rich glossy black color that has remained in great condition over its 31-year lifespan.

What we Love and What You Should Know

This Submariner is in overall very nice condition. The case is strong with some scratches and has been polished. The dial has remained very glossy with light patina. The lume on the dial has developed light patina and is almost chalk-white in color. The hands are later service replacements and the color of the lume matches the hour markers pretty closely. The bezel is in good condition with light scratches; the lume pip at 12 o'clock appears to be a replacement. The bracelet is in good condition with some stretch. The clasp is stamped "M10," indicating it is from 1988, which makes sense for the production of the watch. The inside caseback is stamped "5512," which is not uncommon. The crystal has some scratches. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
