1972 Rolex Datejust 'Non-lume' Ref. 1601

1972 Rolex Datejust 'Non-lume' Ref. 1601

Why This Watch Matters

The Rolex Datejust is a classic for a reason. And this example, with its silver dial and Jubilee bracelet, serves as a reminder of that very fact.

The Full Story

The Rolex Datejust has remained in a class of its own since it was introduced in 1945. While many vintage Rolex sport models have skyrocketed in popularity (and their prices as well), the Datejust has remained a consistent favorite among all genders for its wearability and accessibility. The vintage examples, particularly, have maintained great value over time. This example has all the signature elements of a vintage Datejust: Silver dial? Check. Fluted bezel? Check. Jubilee bracelet? Check!

This is a slight variation of the more common silver dial Datejust as it does not have lume on the dial nor within the hands. These "non-lume" Datejusts were made this way despite the "T SWISS T" designation at six o'clock. It does show us how uncommon non-lume examples are that Rolex did not even bother to print another set of dials but rather just not apply lume to a dial destined for a lumed watch. Today, the lack of lume means much more ease of wear without having to worry about a knock setting a lume plot loose. As a daily watch or an heirloom piece, this Datejust will keep your wrist company for many years to come.
