1973 Omega Seamaster Cosmic 2000 Ref. 166.137

1973 Omega Seamaster Cosmic 2000 Ref. 166.137

Why This Watch Matters

Integrated bracelets for the 70s? Groundbreaking.

The Full Story

A mainstay of the Omega brand since it first hit the catalog in 1948, the Seamaster line has taken on many forms, from a versatile, everyday timepiece to a robust diving tool. This example dates to 1973; from where the collection was roughly a decades earlier in the 1950s, we can see how Omega iterated on a theme and answered the market's demand. The watch we have here has a more substantial case than most Seamasters, a integrated bracelet, and a very sport-foward overall look.

The model name Cosmic was used by Omega on and off throughout the 20th century – most notably in the Cosmic Moonphase of the late 1940s. While you won't find any Cosmic Omegas in the brand's catalog today, examples like this 1973 Seamaster Cosmic 2000 offer a glimpse into a watch brand that was ready to try something new to meet the needs of the watch-wearing public. Does it make sense to create a unique case shape and bracelet for a time and date Seamaster? Probably not. Did Omega do exactly that? Yeah, they did.
